A client will expect to become closer to their fitness goals whether it's losing weight, gaining weight, becoming more flexible, getting faster, getting stronger, and much more.
I have a friend named Tre that wanted to become faster and have better endurance for the football season and track and field, he told me he wanted his 40yd dash time to improve from a 4.9 to around a 4.6, so I trained with him. Some of the areas we trained was explosiveness, strength, endurance and speed, we did this by weightlifting, cardio, core, and resistance training for about 4 months. And when the football season rolled around he had a 40 yard dash time of a 4.57, and became one of the fastest players on the varsity football team.
