Hi, my name is Janet. Fitness has been completely ingrained in my life for over 18 years. It has become a foundation to increase self-confidence, strength, endurance, and mental capacity to continuously improve my fitness level. Additionally, I advocate fitness activity is essential in the development healthy behaviors, increasing the quality of an individual’s lifestyle. Over the last 4 years, as a Certified-Spinning instructor, I have been teaching indoor cycling based on the Spinning methodology. I concentrate my Spinning profiles on intensity, power, endurance, aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, and cardiovascular strength, using a new set of training exercises for each ride. Prior to certification, I have participated in Spinning/Indoor cycling for 7 years. In 2016, I received my AFAA/NASM Group Fitness Instructor certification and Kangoo Dance Silver Instructor license, based on the Kangoo Jumps fitness programs. In June 2017, I received a certification for Tabata GX™ instruction and based on the Tabata GX™ format, I am instructing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes. In 2018, I became ACE-certified as a Personal Trainer. In practice, I follow ACE's Integrated Fitness Model (IFT) for Functional Movement Training. This model focuses on multi-phased training for both cardiorespiratory fitness and resistance training, using fundamental movements that we replicate in our activities of daily living. The 5 major areas of movement include: squats; single-leg movements (lunge variations); pushing; pulling; and rotational movements. I incorporate different modalities for training (HIIT, endurance, balance, power, flexibility, time under tension (TUT), which also includes many different pieces of equipment. Most importantly, clients learn how to use their mind-body connection to identify the proper muscle engagement per movement, while using your body primarily as a stabilizer, instead of standard circuit training. I have trained clients from 16 years old to 75 years old, at varying fitness levels. Each client, therefore, receives a customized program to address their needs and goals. In addition to my group exercise classes and personal training, my personal fitness regime includes—weight lifting (18 years’ experience); long-distance running (18 years’ experience); regular participant in group fitness classes for Barre, Yoga, Pilates and Cardio Kickboxing (8 years’ experience).

What to Expect

The first meeting is a general assessment of how the client moves. We will go through the 5 main areas of movement of functional training to identify level of fitness, range of motion, imbalances, and body awareness. The first meeting is also educational so the client understands what we are doing and why we are doing it. From there, I will develop a tailored-program for the client based on the data collected in the assessment. There will be a range of training techniques, modalities, and equipment that will be involved in cardio fitness and resistance training. I am not going to be a drill sergeant with any client. I believe in having fun and enjoying the workout. I want to encourage, support, uplift, and motivate my clients to keep fitness integrated in their lifestyle for improved health outcomes, independence, and longevity. I challenge clients mentally, physically and sometimes emotionally to experience more mind-body awareness, to embrace tension, to push past limits and plateaus, to believe in themselves, and to explore new ways to move. And all of this is done in a safe environment. Pain is never the goal. Safety will always be a priority.

Client Success Story

My clients, who have been with me for shorter or longer periods, all walk away with the knowledge of how to practice fundamental movements that are executed in daily life. The intention has been to help clients learn how to move correctly so they can avoid common pains and symptoms of improper movement. One of my longer term clients came to me over a year ago with very little cardio training and no resistance training in the client's recent history. The client experienced fear and doubt when she was not able to work at increased intensity and resisted many activities, as a result. There was a huge emotional element to the fear, which we discuss frequently. As such, we move at a sustainable pace in order to build her stamina, endurance, and strength. We focus a lot on breathing techniques blended with mind-body awareness to improve her performance and progress, while also working to quell her fears in movements outside of her comfort zone. Anaerobic training has been the biggest challenge--to embrace those movements that are scary because of increased intensity, higher heart rate, shorter breath and the feeling that your body will hit a wall. With proper support, positivity, and encouragement, we have seen tremendous progress, especially mentally. Now, she can see and feel more than ever before her strength, endurance, and ability to push safely beyond limits. She loves lifting and seeing how much power she has in her body. On numerous occasions, she has told me how much our sessions have been a lifesaver and even better than psychotherapy. Metrics and data are great for tracking and measuring progress, but some things like mental and emotional health improvements cannot be quantified. That is where I feel I can make the biggest difference.
